Plumbing & Drainlaying Career

Licensed plumbers and drainlayers install and maintain the pipes, fixtures and fittings that supply water, as well as set up, modify and repair drains for waste removal.  Whether this is commercial or residential, plumbing and drainlaying is a hands on trade which requires technical knowledge and the ability to problem solve.

A plumbing and drainlaying apprenticeship is structured over four years (8,000 hours) of on-the-job work experience.  During this time you attend block courses and on completion of the required unit standards you will achieve the New Zealand Certificate in plumbing and drainlaying.

Once licensed, you can further your qualification to become a certified plumber and drainlayer.  Becoming a certified plumber takes an extra two years on top of your apprenticeship and passing your exams.
