Hot water

Hot Water systems

Electric hot water cylinders are the most common form of water heating in New Zealand.

It's often overlooked and needs regular inspection to keep it running as efficiently as possible and to prolong its lifespan.

Low pressure hot water cylinders are still popular and a good choice for a like-for-like replacement.  However, the growing trend is to replace a low pressure system with a mains pressure system.

Todays modern house's will most likely feature a mains pressure water heating system, delivering a full flow to multiple bathrooms and taps throughout the home.

In New Zealand there are basically three types of hot water pressure - Mains pressure, Unequal low pressure, or Equal low pressure.

MAINS PRESSURE STORAGE - delivers full flow and allows for a wider range of modern fittings. Tank or bore water can also be pumped to mains pressure. If you are living in a residential area you will almost certainly have mains pressure abailable at your gate.

LOW PRESSURE STORAGE - are common in older homes.

What pressure do you have?

Mains Pressure:  If you have mains pressure then it will most likely say "mains pressure" on your hot water cylinder.  When you turn on taps or mixer, the flow will be strong and about the same for the hot and cold pressure.  Mains pressure does not require a copper water vent pipe penetrating your roof.

Low Pressure:  When you turn on the hot water tap or mixer, the flow will be slow from the hot tap and the cold tap may have a higher pressure or the same.  If you put your thumb firmly over the hot water tap and turn the hot water on you should be able to stop the water.  If you have a low pressure system there will be a copper water vent pipe penetrating your roof.

Equal or Unequal Low Pressure:  If your hot water pressure is low then sometimes the cold water pressure for your shower will have intentionally restricted with a pressure reducing valve or a flow restrictor to make the hot and cold water pressure equal.  This has been done to help your shower water mix more evenly.  If this has been done then both your cold and hot water pressure will both be low and your water pressure is what we call Equal Low Pressure.  If the cold water pressure is definitely stronger than the hot water pressure, then your cold water pressure hasn't been restricted then your water pressure is what we call Unequal Low Pressure.

Testimonials

We have used K&B plumbing on a number of renovations and they have been great to deal with, from John, Nick & Jan right through their team, all professional, friendly and willing to work in with whatever the client wants.

or... we have used K&B plumbing on a number of renovations and quite frankly we cannot believe we still have running water!  Nick was possibly born with a box of Heineken under his arm and Jan has shares in Marisco Vineyards the maker of Ned Rose - let's be honest, John basically carries the team!

Greg & Helen - Sunnyhills

Thank you so much K&B Plumbing for coming to our rescue when we received an exorbitant water bill, and had no idea we had a leak occurring under our house.

John arrived promptly, organised the leak detectors, and the boys arrived 7.30am the next morning to dig up the concrete path and fix the leak below.  I was very impressed with the fast reliable service.  Plus when I needed the invoice urgently to seek a credit on the water bill, Jan had it to me prontissimo.

“Since mid to late 1990 I have used K & B Plumbing and I have formed a very strong partnership with K & B Plumbing. They are very knowledgeable, professional, proactive, also I am required to present 2 to 3 quotes to the business K & B Plumbing have always been competitive and I was delighted that they proceeded and completed the work. The quality of workmanship, reliability and trustworthy nature of the staff was also a major consideration.
I have no hesitation in recommending K & B Plumbing and their team for your next plumbing needs”.

Nizam - East Tamaki

THANKS, A MILLION. We were so lucky K&B Plumbing dropped everything and came to our rescue when we had a flood and saved so much more damage happening to our house. They knew what they were doing, and it was sorted pronto.

We then got K&B Plumbing back to fit a sink and plumbing our washing machine in when we renovated. It wasn’t straight forward at all. However, they made it look effortless and had an excellent solution for our layout.

Prompt, reliable service with experienced plumbers is what you get with K&B Plumbing at a reasonable price.
