Backflow (IQP Certified)
Backflow Prevention auckland
K&B Plumbing has a team of approved, trusted, and experienced Independently Qualified Persons (IQPs) serving the greater Auckland area. We install and maintain backflow devices to protect your water supply from contamination.
If you already have a backflow device installed, our IQPs are available to carry out annual backflow valve checks, services, and repairs. We provide 12a Certification to ensure the water in your home or workplace remains sanitary and safe.
Many Auckland homes have swimming pools, spas, and rainwater retention tanks — all of which increase the risk of backflow. Backflow can pose serious health risks but is easily prevented with a backflow prevention device installed by a professional plumber or IQP. The Auckland Council now includes backflow checks on swimming pool installations.
Backflow occurs when water flows in reverse into the public water supply, often caused by a drop in water pressure. This can contaminate your property's water supply with bacteria or chemicals, creating serious health hazards. Backflow prevention devices stop this reverse flow and protect against cross-contamination.
Backflow is categorised into three risk levels: High, Medium, or Low. Most residential properties fall into the medium or low risk category. Properties with spas and swimming pools where contamination could cause severe illness or fatalities are classified as high risk.
Our backflow services include testing existing devices, repairs, and certification through 12a Certification as required by Watercare. We supply, install, test, and certify backflow prevention valves for residential and commercial properties across multiple industries including hospitality, healthcare, and domestic clients. Backflow prevention devices must be tested annually to remain effective.

What causes backflow?
Water flows to your property under the correct pressure, but if this pressure changes there is a risk that water could be drawn back into the water supply. This is called backflow, and it's a serious issue that can contaminate the public water network.
Backflow happens in two main ways:
A sudden drop in water pressure causes a siphon effect, pulling water backwards into the supply network.
When your water supply connects directly to equipment like a boiler or private bore operating at higher pressure, water is forced back into the main supply.
Both scenarios can introduce contaminants and pose health risks, which is why backflow prevention is essential for any property.
WHAT IS A BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE?
A backflow prevention device is a critical safety component that protects your water supply from potential contamination. These devices work by preventing water from flowing backwards through your plumbing system, which can happen due to pressure changes or system failures.
The type of backflow prevention device you need depends on the level of risk associated with your property. Common options include reduced pressure zone (RPZ) devices and double check valves. Your plumber will assess your specific situation to recommend the most appropriate solution.
The device is typically installed at your water meter on the customer side of the point of supply. This strategic location ensures that all water entering your property is protected from contamination. Regular maintenance and testing of your backflow prevention device is important to ensure it continues to function properly and meets local regulations.
Which water connections require a backflow device
Residential customers need a backflow prevention device when installing an irrigation meter or fire sprinkler system.
Commercial customers are required to install a backflow prevention device in the following situations: applying for a new or additional water meter, relocating or separating an existing meter, installing a fire sprinkler system, or installing an irrigation meter.
In all cases, our team can help ensure your system meets Auckland's water safety requirements and local regulations.
Devices are required for the following to protect against potential contaminations:
Irrigation systems
Fire hose reels
Fire irrigation systems
Grease traps
Chlorinators
Cooling towers
Rubbish bin wash down bays

Testimonials
We have used K&B plumbing on a number of renovations and they have been great to deal with, from John, Nick & Jan right through their team, all professional, friendly and willing to work in with whatever the client wants.
or... we have used K&B plumbing on a number of renovations and quite frankly we cannot believe we still have running water! Nick was possibly born with a box of Heineken under his arm and Jan has shares in Marisco Vineyards the maker of Ned Rose - let's be honest, John basically carries the team!
Thank you so much K&B Plumbing for coming to our rescue when we received an exorbitant water bill, and had no idea we had a leak occurring under our house.
John arrived promptly, organised the leak detectors, and the boys arrived 7.30am the next morning to dig up the concrete path and fix the leak below. I was very impressed with the fast reliable service. Plus when I needed the invoice urgently to seek a credit on the water bill, Jan had it to me prontissimo.
“Since mid to late 1990 I have used K & B Plumbing and I have formed a very strong partnership with K & B Plumbing. They are very knowledgeable, professional, proactive, also I am required to present 2 to 3 quotes to the business K & B Plumbing have always been competitive and I was delighted that they proceeded and completed the work. The quality of workmanship, reliability and trustworthy nature of the staff was also a major consideration.
I have no hesitation in recommending K & B Plumbing and their team for your next plumbing needs”.
THANKS, A MILLION. We were so lucky K&B Plumbing dropped everything and came to our rescue when we had a flood and saved so much more damage happening to our house. They knew what they were doing, and it was sorted pronto.
We then got K&B Plumbing back to fit a sink and plumbing our washing machine in when we renovated. It wasn’t straight forward at all. However, they made it look effortless and had an excellent solution for our layout.
Prompt, reliable service with experienced plumbers is what you get with K&B Plumbing at a reasonable price.
